I don’t usually tell the history behind a recipe but since you may be wondering why in the world anyone would combine things to make Chocolate Cayenne Rice Krispy Treats, I will give you this one.

This is a unique recipe and it is a good one!

The story behind Chocolate Cayenne Rice Krispy Treats

It is pretty simple really.

My husband was eating regular old Rice Krispy Treats after I made a double batch to take when we helped our sons move.

We had a pile of Cayenne peppers on the table from the garden bounty that I put there so he could eat with his dinner.

I was telling him that there was a National Rice Krispy Day on September 18th and that I was making a collection of recipes for it. He asked if there was one with peppers in it.

“Uh, no, I don’t think so.” I asked Google. “No.”

“Well, there are chocolate bars with hot peppers in them. There should be Rice Krispy Treats with peppers in them. And chocolate.”

He took a bite of his Krispy Treat and a bite of his pepper and thoughtfully chewed. “Yes, there should be.”

And so you have it. Chocolate Cayenne Rice Krispy Treats!

The Peppers

My family loves peppers. They love everything between a nice little bit of heat to burn your face off heat! They will sign a waiver to try hot sauces in stores.

These Chocolate Cayenne Rice Krispy Treats can be made either way, depending on how much pepper and even what kind of pepper you add.

I used Cayenne because that is what we had ample of from the garden and I suggested a reasonable amount in the ingredients list. It is really just a suggestion though.

7 cayenne peppers on table

If your garden is giving a different pepper than Cayennes or you like a hotter or more mild pepper, feel free to add whatever kind you prefer. Chili peppers would be good too.

Add more or less, depending on how hot you like your food and how hot your peppers are. Sometimes, the later it gets in the season, the hotter the peppers are.

Removing the seeds can lessen the heat so keep them or leave them as you wish.

Can you make them ahead of time?

Yes! Chocolate Cayenne Rice Krispy Treats can be made ahead and will stay fresh for several days.

How should I store my Treats?

Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. The refrigerator is a great place. They will stay fresh for several days.
