How to Clean Your Cast Iron Skillet

Cooking with cast iron has many advantages.  Here is an article that states 10 good reasons to try cast iron cooking.  I have been using my cast iron skillets more often lately and I wish I had started sooner.  One of the issues that kept me from doing more of it was my food sticking but I just needed to use it more so it would be seasoned properly.  Now it works GREAT; even eggs don’t stick.  That is the true test!  The other issue was cleaning it. Have you wondered like I did how to clean your cast iron skillet? It seemed a hassle to pull out oil every time and rub it in.  It really isn’t though!  I love that it washes so quickly and wiping the oil on it really takes less than a minute.

So! How to wash it without harming the seasoning or letting it rust?

I cooked ground beef in this pan and this is as dirty as it got.

Just run some hot water in it and rub it with a cloth until it is clean.

I put them on the towel only long enough to wash the other one and pick up a towel.  You do not want them to sit wet; they could rust.  It is better to let them sit dirty than wet.  Dry them thoroughly.

Put just a dab of vegetable oil in them and rub gently with a paper towel until they are totally covered with a thin layer of oil.  They can get goopy and sticky if you use too much.  Just rub it off if you do.

And that is it!  They are clean and ready to go for the next time. 🙂
