How to Make Garden Fresh Lettuce Last

It is not necessary to eat your fresh lettuce right away when you know how to make garden fresh lettuce last!

It is discouraging to pick beautiful, fresh lettuce in the morning and by dinner time it is wilted and unappealing. Lettuce does not take long to lose its crisp, fresh texture. BUT! There is a way to keep it fresh not only until dinner time but for days! Yes, really! 🙂 I am going to tell you how to make garden fresh lettuce last!

Wash the lettuce as soon as you come in from the garden (or from the Farmer’s Market) in cold water. Shake most of the water off but don’t dry the lettuce.

Wet paper towels and squeeze out as much water as possible. Layer the lettuce on the paper towels.

If you have a lot of lettuce, just put more damp paper towels between them.

Layer as many as you need, fold them, and put in a gallon ziplock bag. Squeeze as much air out as possible and seal.

Put it in the salad drawer of the refrigerator for up to a few days. This is two days later and it looks and tastes just as good as when I put it in the bag! I could have left it in even longer.

Fresh lettuce is a great start to Mediterranean Garden Salad.
