How To Cook Butternut Squash; an easy step by step guide with pictures. Learn how to easily cook a squash in your oven that will turn out perfectly every time.
Does a big, hard squash make you wonder what in the world to do with it? This is an easy way to cook butternut squash.
Butternut squash is a great thing to grow in the garden. It usually produces well and is easy to keep for months by simply storing it in a dry, cool place. It is also easy to cook and freezes well.
I love to have small containers of this all cooked up and ready to thaw and serve as a side dish through the winter. It can be frozen with or without the butter; however you like it.
It is shown here with Low Carb Hamburger Pie.
How to Cook Butternut Squash
(Printable card is just below.)
1. Spray your pan with non stick spray.
2. Cut off the blossom end (narrow, top end) of the squash and cut in half lengthwise.
3. Scoop out seeds. I save mine for the chickens. They LOVE them.
4. Poke several times with a fork to release steam as it cooks.
5. Lay cut side down in pan and add just a little bit of water to cover the bottom.
6. Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for about 40 minutes. If you have larger squash, it may take longer. Poke it with a fork and when it goes in easily, it is done.
7. Scoop out the orange flesh with a spoon.
8. Add butter, salt and pepper to taste and serve.
It will freeze well with or without the butter.
