The same commercial handbook lists no recommended fall planting window for NC West, a conservative position based on commercial production risks in high-elevation areas. Home gardeners in lower-elevation western locations, such as the foothills or sheltered valley gardens, may have more flexibility than that commercial table implies.

However, mountain gardeners should not assume they have the same window as Piedmont or coastal growers without checking local conditions first.

Elevation, slope, and exposure all create microclimates that can make one yard meaningfully different from a neighbor’s.
